When did you first realize this person you’ve been into and dating is the person you want to spend eternity with? What was the moment? I love asking this during engagement sessions.
What’s funny is the answer isn’t full of sparkle and shine. It isn’t when the person was all done up to-the-nines nor was being awarded the highest honor at work or in life. It had nothing to do with achievements or where they came from.
It usually is a much simpler answer—from a much simpler moment.
It happens when nothing fancy was going on. It’s when you realize how perfect they are just being themselves, comfortable in their own skin, not proving anything to anyone. It’s in moments that you realize who they are—the whole package, even the nitty gritty parts—are absolutely beautiful. And who they are is worth everything to hold onto, forever.
You want all the highs, and all the lows… with them.
It’s when you see a future spent with them… able to see the big dreams you will, hand in hand, chase after together. But also… you are aware and can see glimpses of the most mundane moments in your future, and you know those moments will become the most fulfilling. Because you’re with them. Choosing at every turn to build a life with them. And you are aware of how immensely lucky you are.
It’s simple. It’s real. It’s true.
I know the ring always tends to take the attention when it comes to a proposal. Or being swept into the process of planning one of the most magical days of your life… but the thing that shines the most at a proposal? How perfectly and effortlessly joy, comfort and trust radiate from the two of you. As if strangers and passersby are witnessing a moment in time that was always meant to be.
Ian and Hannah—I am so ardently happy for the two of you, that you’ve found your person and that you’re on this next adventure together. And I know all the passion, joy and love will find you. Marriage is pretty rad—it’s gonna be magical. Just you wait. Here is to the two of you! Cheers and so much love to you both.
